A murder inquiry has been launched after a 'funny and charismatic' man who was seriously assaulted in the early hours of the morning has died.

Jack Jermy-Doyle, 25, was assaulted on the junction of Harris Street and Birley Street in Preston at approximately 2.40am last Friday (August 12) following an altercation with two men.

He was taken to hospital but died yesterday (Sunday, August 14). His family are being supported by specially trained officers.

In a tribute Jack’s family said: “No words can describe the utter devastation we as a family are feeling. Jack was a funny, charismatic, amazing young man who had so much to offer this world and we are truly broken that he has been taken from us so soon. He will forever be in our hearts and thoughts.”

Two men - aged 21 and 28 from Preston - have been arrested on suspicion of wounding and are on police bail while enquiries continue.

Police are continuing to appeal for anybody who saw any of the three men described below in the area before or after the altercation or in Preston on Thursday evening or the early hours of Friday morning.

Male one is described as white, approximately 5ft 9ins tall in his late 20s. He was wearing a grey Under Armour baseball cap, grey shirt with black stripes and black patterned shorts.

Male two, who is described as short, of a slim build, with blonde hair. He was wearing a lime green top and shorts.

Male three, who is the victim, is described as white, approximately 6ft 1ins tall, in his early 20s, with dark hair. He was wearing a black and white check shirt over a black t-shirt, blue jeans and black trainers.

Police say they also need to speak to a fourth man who could be a key witness, helping the victim after the assault.

He was seen in the Friargate area following the altercation. He is described as black, stocky build, in his late 20s with short hair. He was possibly wearing a dark green tracksuit and had a man bag with him.

Det Insp Bryony Midgley said: “First and foremost my thoughts are with Jack’s loved ones. This is a heartbreaking and tragic incident which happened when Jack was enjoying a night out with his friend.

“This is now a murder investigation and while we have made two arrests, we still need to speak to anyone who either saw the altercation or who saw any of the individuals described above either before or after the incident so that we can piece together the events which have led to Jack’s tragic death.

“We know a number of people were present in the area at the time, many of whom provided assistance and first aid. If you have not come forward to speak to police yet, I would urge you to please do so as soon as you can.

“Similarly, I would ask anybody who may have footage which could assist our enquiries to make contact with the police.

“Whatever information you have – no matter how insignificant you think it is – it may be key to the investigation so please come and speak to us.
