Some residents in Blackburn and Darwen may still not have running water, United Utilities has said.

The update comes after a pipe bursting this weekend, resulting in issues with water supply across the borough.

The burst pipe on Old Farmside, in the Ewood area of Blackburn, caused a loss of water pressure for some homes whilst others were forced to go without water for more than 30 hours in baking temperatures.

A fleet of tankers were dispatched to pump water into the system and three water bottle stations were set up.

On Sunday evening (August 14), United Utilities said engineers had managed to bypass the burst and many customers ‘would see a return to normal mains supply’. The remaining customers would then see their water pressure improve over the course of the evening.

In an update today (Monday), United Utilities again apologised for the disruption to supplies caused by the burst water main.

A spokesperson said: “The repairs to the burst main are continuing. Due to the complexity of the repair and the depth of the main, it’s taking longer than expected to safely get this fixed. Please be assured, our teams are working non-stop to get taps flowing again and will continue to do so until we have things back to normal.

“We have managed to put a temporary fix in place by bypassing the burst water main and rerouting the water supply, allowing us to get the majority of our customer’s water back on.

“However, in doing so we came across a further issue and some customers may still be experiencing no water or poor pressure, we are working to resolve this as quickly as we can.”

Free bottled water stations will remain open at Witton Park and Pleasington Playing fields on Monday.

A Blackburn with Darwen Council spokesperson said: "We understand that the situation regarding the water outage in some areas of our borough is deeply frustrating. Some households have been without running water since Saturday, during an exceptionally hot weekend.

"We would like reassure residents that we are working closely with United Utilities as the lead agency, as well as other partners within the local area.We have worked with United Utilities to help identify vulnerable customers and as such, the original list of vulnerable customers has now been increased, meaning more vulnerable residents are being supported.

"Vulnerable customers receive bottled water drop-offs from United Utilities to their homes. Over the weekend, we supported United Utilities in identifying and setting up three water distribution points.

"Two of these have remained open to support customers in the Blackburn area. We would encourage any vulnerable customers who have not registered with United Utilities to do so by phoning: 0345 072 6093. This will ensure bottled water is dropped off at these people’s homes.

"We understand that the work has been very complex due to the depth of the water main making it difficult to safely access and begin repairs and United Utilities staff have been working around the clock to get water supplies back on.

"If any resident is without water and would like to use the shower facilities at two of our Council leisure centres (Blackburn and Witton), you are welcome to do so, during their usual opening hours. Lastly, thank you for your patience during these extremely challenging times."
