Drivers can expect long delays Northbound on the M6 and M61.

Traffic was backed up on the M61 this morning (Sunday 14 August) as drivers headed north to join the M6 on what is the hottest weekend of the year. Temperatures reached the mid-thirties in parts of the country and a extreme heat alert has been issued by the Met Office.

There were delays of up to 40 minutes yesterday and this is likely to be replicated as families look to make the best of the decent weather by heading to the coast or the Lake District.

The M55 - the main route to Blackpool was also busy at the junction with the M6.

Traffic should ease throughout the day and yesterday normal driving conditions resumed after 3pm.

Lancashire Telegraph:

However, motorists can expect long delays later in the evening on the M55 due to roadworks and the number of people leaving the coastal areas to head home.

Onn Saturday the journey time for someone leaving Blackpool at 9pm and reaching the M6 was approximately 45 minutes.
