The future of a beloved chip shop in Blackburn is looking uncertain as the building is currently up for sale.

The Chippery on Corporation Street has been a local favourite since it opened over 30 years ago.

In 2017, the popular chippy was taken over by new management and current manager Servet Tasdemir introduced new dishes alongside the chippy classics in hopes of supporting the long-running business.

Unfortunately, due to not being able to keep up with the upkeep due to the increase in the cost of living, the landlord of the building is not extending the lease.

The landlord is currently looking for someone to take over the premise, leaving the fate of The Chippery in the hands of the successful buyer.

Servet, 50, said: “There are big problems in this shop. The machines are having issues and water’s coming out of the floor.

“Hopefully the new owner will improve it, but I don’t know. It’s up to them. There are people coming into the shop every day to look at the shop but what they will do with it? I don’t know.”

The Chippery has been closed from July 25 and is set to open on Monday, August 15 but due to the possibility of circumstances changing, Servet added: “It will hopefully on Monday, I hope so, but we will see.”

The pandemic saw businesses struggle due to lockdown and The Chippery lost a lot of its regular customers.

Servet continued: “Everything’s too expensive these days and it’s hard to run a business now.

“After covid especially, we lost a lot of business and customers. We had to put prices up because of everything becoming more expensive, but that affects customers as well.”

It’s unclear when The Chippery is set to close and Servet was unable to confirm the last date the chip shop would be open due to it being out of his hands.

He did stress, however, that there have been keen buyers coming into The Chippery to view the building most days he’s been open. Speaking on when the sale and possible renovation could be, Servet said: “It could be in the next weeks, or next month or Christmas time, it’s difficult to say.”

The Chippery has been Blackburn’s dearest chippy since the early 90s, serving as a landmark for the town and the locals who share some of their fondest memories in the old-school fish shop.
