A generous stranger from Hyndburn has been praised for his random act of kindness after paying for 18 bags of Werther’s Originals.

Support worker Michelle Brindle, 50, and her sister Julie, 55, were doing a food shop for their 76-year-old mother in B&M in Accrington on Tuesday (August 9) when a random man ‘made their day’ with a selfless act.

The kind gentleman, who Julie described as a man in his 50s, with a beard, spotted the large stock of Werther’s Originals in Julie’s basket and made a jokey remark to the sisters asking, “do you like them then?”

Michelle and Julie explained that the large bulk of sweets were for their mother who has a swallowing disease that prevents her from eating properly, so Werther’s sweets are all she’ll eat.

What followed the exchange between the sisters and the random man, left Michelle and Julie speechless. Michelle said: “The next thing, we hadn’t realised what was going on, but he just went, ‘right tell your mum happy Tuesday and I hope she enjoys them’ and we realised he’d already paid for the sweets whilst I quickly went to grab something else.

“And that were it, I was crying, my sister was crying, and the lady and her little daughter behind us in the queue were crying. We were absolutely speechless; it was so kind.”

As Michelle and Julie were leaving the shop, they saw the man pulling out of the car park in his black four by four BMW so they gestured thank you and he waved back at the pair as he drove off.

Michelle added: “And that’s all we know of him. We don’t know his name or nothing and he’s got my mum a month’s supply of Werther’s Originals.

“We couldn’t even say thank you properly because we were crying.”

The two daughters were overwhelmed by the stranger’s generosity and told their mum about the stranger paying the £18 for the Werther's originals. Michelle added: “We could barely tell her properly as well because we were still so emotional and then she started crying with us too.

The mother said: “There’s still some lovely people left in the world, it’s restored our faith in human kind.”

Michelle believes that this selfless man will inspire other people to “just be kind to each other” because you don’t know how much it can make someone’s day. She added: “It doesn’t even have to cost you anything, but if you’re just nice to strangers it makes everyone feel good doesn’t it.”

Michelle, Julie and their mother are overwhelmed by the gentleman’s random act of kindness and want to reach out to the stranger. They said: “We just want to thank whoever he is.

“Thank you for restoring my mum’s faith in mankind and we hope someone returns the same kindness to him.

“In difficult times like this where people are struggling, your lovely gesture has made us so emotional and means the world to us, so thank you.”
