A community group said it wanted to do 'all it could do to help others' as it donated 1,800 meals to its local foodbank.

Volunteers from the Pakistan Welfare Association (PWA), one of the oldest community groups in Blackburn helped to unload the packs at the Blackburn Foodbank on Oakenhurst Road.

The food products were bought by the group after taking advice from the foodbank who listed the type of products that were needed.

Secretary of the PWA, Ajaib Hussain, said: “This was part of the 75th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence celebrations.

“We decided to donate something to the foodbank. We always do make donations.

“Some years ago we donated 800 meals and this week we are donating 1,800 meals.

“We know the situation some families may be facing across the country and in our town. People are desperate and people cannot afford to feed their families.”
