A RARE photograph of arguably one of Accrington’s most controversial buildings nearing completion.
Taken in 1969 it shows the new public toilets situated ion the town’s Union Street car park.
The revolutionary design, compared to a snail by detractors, was loved by some and hated by others. The toilets stood at the entrance off Union Street to the large free car park.
They were demolished to make way for the Arndale Centre which now stands on the car park site.
In the background is Castle Street and the railway viaduct.
Did you ever use the Union Street toilets? Were you sorry to see them go?
