The girls’ football teams at the Blackburn Eagles were established just two years ago, when coach Christopher Bentley realised his daughter was having a difficult time playing in mixed teams.
Mr Bentley teamed up with Eagles chairman Christopher Whalley, and membership quickly grew from 16 girls on one team, to 70 in six teams of all age groups.
Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph last week, head of girls’ development, Mr Bentley said: “Tonight there were ten new girls who had never played before today, just following from the women’s Euros success, and I’ll gladly train any girl who wants to play football.”
Mr Whalley added: “If we can get them in an environment where they have fun, that’s what it’s all about. We don’t go on ability either, we let anyone play.”
Mr Whalley said wants to make football accessible and enjoyable for as many girls as possible, and is offering free football classes for girls over the summer.
He said:“Come along, give it a go. If you don’t like it, never mind, but I can guarantee by the end you’ll leave with at least 12 new friends, you’ll have learned a new game and had a great time.”
