A Pendle bike manufacturer is celebrating Cycle to Work Day on Thursday by highlighting the fact that a rising number of Gen Z’s are more environmentally friendly commuters.

Pendle Bike Racks are thrilled that 18-24 year olds are cycling and taking public transport to work and will follow the same tracks on Thursday, August 4.

Government research reveals that increases in transport costs are pushing 43 per cent of 18-24-year-olds to consider changing their method of travel to include more public transport or cycling.

Of that amount, 37 per cent of those respondents who never cycle to work would do so if employers provided better storage facilities for their bikes.

Investments by employers in reliable bike storage in the workplace, is driving product demand at Pendle Bike Racks, which has been at the forefront of the UK bike rack, storage, trailer and accessories industry for nearly 35 years.

Speaking of the growing ‘active commute’ trend, Chris Smith, MD of Pendle Bike Racks, said: “Workers of all ages, particularly those entering the workplace on a lower starting wage, really need to tighten their belts and save money where they can."

With households currently facing a squeeze on disposable income, workers are seeking budget-friendly ways to get to work.  According to the research, 81 per cent of respondents across all age groups are expecting their transport costs to increase over the next six months which is prompting the shift towards a more ‘active commute’.

Chris continued: “What they don’t need, is the worry that the bike they have invested in is at risk of being stolen, which is where we come in.

"We’ve led innovation in the industry for decades, so we know how important reliable bike storage solutions are in the workplace – and how to deliver them.

“For those facing longer commutes, you can still save on fuel costs where you can by opting to drive and cycle part of the way using a rack en route so you can commit to the cause.

“It all helps to save money, environmental impact and boost health and fitness levels – just think of all the savings that can be made on gym membership too!”

Held on Thursday, August 4, Cycle to Work Day, is the UK’s biggest cycling commuting event.

Promoting the health, cost and environmental benefits of cycling to work, the initiative has an online community portal at https://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/cycletoworkday, where people can log how many miles they have cycled on their commute.
