A street food restaurant chain has officially opened its first restaurant in Lancashire.

Mowgli, known for its authentic Indian dishes, opened on the corner of Church Street and Birley Street in Preston's Miller Arcade earlier this month - and it already has rave reviews.

CEO Nisha Katona founded the company in 2014 and wanted to create Indian dishes that are “a million miles away from the curry stereotype.”

Nisha, from Ormskirk, said: “Preston was my stomping ground as a barrister for many years.

“Every single detail is felt and we ask ourselves - would we want to sit in this very seat with this view and this lighting? If it’s not good enough for us it’s not good enough for you”

Mowgli has 18 restaurants across the UK, including those in major cities such as Manchester, Leeds and beyond.

It describes itself as a fresh, honest, home and street food kitchen that has been pared back and unplugged.

Nisha said: “Mowgli is a home from home for the hungry and continues to be for our teams and guests.

"It is a place that is toddler and dog-friendly, somewhere you can spend time alone with a book."

Mowgli will support Chorley-based charity Derian House Children’s Hospice as it’s chosen house charity and hopes to donate tens of thousands of pounds each year to help the local community.

Nisha said: “I am glad I am able to go to a town that is so close to my heart and also enrich life in Preston.

"It's a with a happy place to eat and work."

Gunpowder chicken, tea steeped chickpeas and picnic potato curry are just some of the mouth-watering dishes on the menu.

Mowgli's website states: "These dishes convey the truth that real Indian food is extremely healthy, often vegan and always packed with fresh flavour."

The restaurant has already received a lot of positive reviews on Google since opening.

One person said: “This place has topped my list of places to eat in Preston, the flavour in the food is crazy.”

“The flavours were spot on and the portion sizes were fantastic,” said another.

A third reviewer said: “Have visited Manchester a few times and the service was better in Preston.

“Glad you are here and keep up the good work.”

Nisha gave up her 20 year career as a full time Barrister to start the business.

She opened her first site in Liverpool before expanding to Manchester less than a year later.

In 2018 Mowgli was awarded a placement in The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 list and in 2019 Nisha was recognised with an MBE in the New Year Honours list for services to the Food Industry.
