The best and worst GP practices in Hyndburn, according to patients, have been revealed.

Patients were invited to take part in the GP Patient Survey earlier this year, letting them have their say on their local GP surgery.

The best surgeries in Hyndburn, according to patients are King Street Medical Centre in Accrington, Blackburn Road Medical Centre, also in Accrington, Dr Bello’s Surgery in Church and Great Harwood Surgery.

King Street Medical Centre was the highest rated, with 85 per cent of patients rating it as ‘good’ overall, while Blackburn Road Medical Centre was rated as the second best in the borough, with 83 per cent of patients saying their overall experience was ‘good’.

At both Dr Bello’s Surgery and Great Harwood Surgery, 82 per cent of patients rated the overall experience they had as ‘good’.

The worst rated in Hyndburn were Oswald Medical Centre in Oswaldtwistle, Richmond Medical Centre in Accrington and PWE Accrington Victoria, also in Accrington.

Oswald Medical Centre had an overall satisfaction rating of 51 per cent, while at Richmond Medical Centre, 53 per cent of patients said their experience with the practice was ‘good’.

Of the patients at PWE Accrington Victoria, 61 per cent rated their experience as ‘good’.

Dr G Manjooran, Dr R Sharma, Dr Y Hasani, Dr J Skaria from Oswald Medical Centre said: “The practice is taking time to digest and reflect on the results which are made available to us at the same time as the general public.

“436 surveys were sent to Oswald Medical Centre patients and just 101 surveys were sent back – representative of just 0.7% of our patient population.

“We note that an overall rating of good was received from 51% of respondents and whilst we recognise that this is lower than we would hope, this is only 2% behind one of our closest neighbouring practices.

“Continuous quality improvement is extremely important to us at the surgery and this is something we are looking closely at presently.

“We are carrying out a number of quality improvement cycles including call handling and appointment booking and the results of this survey will certainly feed into these pieces of work.

“We are however seeing record levels of demand and a return of covid infections in our team and the general population which we must manage carefully in order to ensure patient safety.”

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust took over responsibility for the PWE Medical Group practices in February 2022. Neil Berry, Divisional Director of Operations responsible for PWE, said: "Thank you to all those patients who took time to complete this survey - your feedback is really important.

"We know there are areas for improvement and we already have a plan in place to improve our patient experience.

"If anyone would like to be part of shaping our future, we are setting up a new Patient Participation Group to help bring different ideas to the surgeries to help us treat patients better or to improve what we do in some way."
