People are being invited to “walk in the shoes” of university learners whose lives have changed thanks to their degrees.
Burnley College University Centre is placing up to 50 pairs of shoes in locations around the town to symbolise some of the learners who successfully invest in themselves each year at the university centre.
The launch of the campaign included amazing artwork at ‘the kiosk’ in the centre of Charter Walk, Burnley, with QR codes to scan to find out more and see which courses will enable you to achieve your dreams.
Single parent Mary Harron, from Nelson, is one of the learners fronting the new ‘Walk In Their Shoes’ campaign – inspiring people to take the next step towards doing something different.
Mary, 40, was frustrated after missing out on promotions and pay rises at work and decided life was too short to stay in a job where she felt she wasn’t valued. She took the decision to go back to study.
She said: “I had time to think about what I really wanted to do. I was fed up of being overlooked for promotion so I decided to get the qualifications I needed to get a better job.
“Once I started, I realised there was a great mix of students on the course – and quite a few who were in similar situations.”
Kasom Shah, 21, a former football scholar at Accrington Stanley, enrolled at BCUC when he needed a ‘plan B’ after experiencing setbacks to his dream of playing professional football.
Drawn to the campus’ state-of-the-art sport facilities, the former Blessed Trinity RC College is now in his third year studying BSc Sport & Exercise and is encouraging others to find their feet at BCUC.
Kasom explained: “I knew I wanted to do something within sport, but I just didn’t know where to start.
“I looked at lots of different universities but decided I wanted to stay close to home. I found the course on BCUC’s website, rang through and ended up going for a chat with one of the course tutors on the same day.”
Nina Parkin, Dean of Burnley College University Courses, said: “When considering degree-level study, the first step can be the hardest. We have a wide range of courses available to suit all needs, ages and abilities, and our amazing staff are here to guide you on your journey.”
