A charity is inviting members of the community from all faiths to its Eid in the Park event in Nelson this weekend.

The Nelson charity Fountains of Knowledge is organising a park event to mark the first day of this year’s Eid ul-Adha festival, also known as the ‘Festival of the Sacrifice’, which is the second of the two main Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims every year.

The Eid in the Park event will take place at Walverden Park in Brunswick Street where prayer will start at 9am on Saturday, July 9.

Offering fun and good food for all the family, there will be free activities including bouncy castles and games, as well as a barbeque, a delightful array of cakes and plenty of sweets to go round.

The event is inclusive of everyone from different backgrounds and religions. English language Qurans and other Islamic literature will be offered out to everyone, so people eager to learn more about the culture will be able to fully immerse themselves into the festival.

Matting will be provided; however, it is encouraged that people bring a Musallah to the event for themselves. Parking is available in Edenfield School car park.

British weather is never the most reliable, so in the typical event of rain, the Eid Prayer will move inside to Masjid Sunnah Nelson in Brunswick Street.

An announcement to confirm this will be made by the charity hosting the event at 7am on the day, but currently the Met Office is forecasting dry weather for the weekend.

Fountains of Knowledge is a local charity that works with schools to facilitate teaching and learning in the most deprived areas of Lancashire, and works within communities to make positive changes in adults’ and young people’s lives.

The charity’s Eid in the Park event coincides with the first day of Eid ul-Adha which is based on the sighting of the moon and has been predicted to fall on Saturday, July 9.

This second major Eid festival of the year lasts for four days and will come to an end on the evening of Wednesday, July 13.
