LOVE them or loathe them computers are very much part of our everyday lives.

It’s hard to believe that the average mobile phone is a more powerful computer than the first ground-breaking machines which could take up the whole floor of an office building.

We have found some great photos in our archives which chart the arrival of the computer in East Lancashire which for many Looking Back readers is very much within recent memory.

School pupils today will probably be amazed to learn that even in the mid 80s, businesses and colleges (and newspapers!) were only just beginning to come to terms with this new technology.

A display of these new machines was big news and Lancashire Evening Telegraph photographers were often sent to record the new phenomenon.

The rise has certainly been rapid when you consider how much all of us rely on computers today.
