Bolton Abbey

Rector’s message: This Sunday is the third Sunday after Trinity. We are reminded this Sunday about the parable of the lost sheep which teaches us that everyone is precious in the sight of God. Not just that, but that God will go out of his way to find those who have lost their way in this world. Although this can sometimes seem unfair to those who remain on the straight and narrow, anyone of us can lose our way in this world and very often for reasons beyond our control. It is our Christian duty is to find those who have become lost and help them find their way home.

Solstice Saunter: Over 600 runners and walkers came together at the Bolton Abbey Estate last week to celebrate the summer solstice and make the most of the extra hours of sunlight.

The sixth annual Solstice Saunter took place on Tuesday 21st June – the longest day of the year - with people of all ages and abilities running, sauntering or walking a five-mile circular route along the riverside and beautiful woodland trails of the estate in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales.

Organised by the Airedale Dodgers Running Club, the event raises funds for Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice in Oxenhope near Keighley, which provides expert palliative care, advice and support for people who are living with a life-limiting condition, as well as supporting their families.

It has been announced today that this year’s sold-out saunter raised an incredible £17,000 for the hospice, taking the total raised over the last six years to around £137,000.

The event was sponsored by JB Springs of Skipton, alongside new headline sponsor Ecology Building Society, who worked with organisers to make the event completely free of single-use plastic water bottles.

The fastest male runners on the day were Kole Broadfoot-Cox, Joe Baker and Matty Warters, while the first three female finishers were Heather Tuffs, Lisa Hirst and Georgina Robinson.

Everyone who took part, including over 100 people who did the event virtually across the UK, received a bespoke Solstice Saunter medal, featuring a soaring red kite.

Skyreholme

Parceval Hall: At the halfway stage of what is proving to be a tightly fought competition, Parcevall Hall Gardens, at Skyreholme, are currently placed third in the race to be named winner of ‘Historic Houses Garden of the Year Award 2022’, sponsored by Christie’s. Votes cast between the three frontrunners is currently so close that the final decision as to who collects this prestigious award could hinge on a single vote going either way on the final day. Parcevall’s Head Gardener, Phill Nelson said: “Everyone has been so supportive in casting votes for us, and whilst being delighted to have moved up into the top three competitors, it is certainly becoming a bit tense here with so little to choose in numbers of votes between us and the other two leading gardens. To currently be placed a clear third from a total of eight shortlisted finalists is fantastic, but being so close to first place, which is our ultimate ambition, well that would be a wonderful achievement. We so much want to claim this Award, not only as recognition for the gardens, but also for our visitors and ultimately for Yorkshire.” To anyone wishing to support Parcevall Hall Gardens, voting remains open until Friday 30th September at www.historichouses.org/vote with the results being announced at the Historic Houses AGM in November. The current season will see the gardens remain open to visitors daily, until the end of October.
