A college student is looking forward to the next stage in her career after penning the designs for a new children’s book.

Claire Murray-Davidson, 18, from Bacup is celebrating after her illustrations were selected to feature in book ‘Carlos The Caring Pirate’.

Claire, who has just completed the level three extended diploma in graphic design at Blackburn College found her passion for illustration during her second year in her course, during which she had to write and illustrate her own children's picture book.

The former All Saints RC School pupil was selected by Janek Puzon to illustrate his second book after approaching the College to see if any students would be able to assist. After seeing Claire’s work he was so impressed that he asked her if she would produce all the illustrations for the book.

Claire, who is hoping to go on to study at the University of Cumbria, said: “I’m really proud of how it’s turned out. Seeing it in the flesh is fantastic. I’ve spent the last couple of months looking at screens constantly; so, to see it on paper really is cool. I just love it.

“If I hadn’t been on this course I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to illustrate the book. The course has been fantastic, it encompasses so much ranging from advanced typography to illustration, I was surprised how much variation there’s been. I’d heard that Blackburn College was the best place to go study Graphic Design and I’d definitely agree.”

Claire has used her illustrations in the book as part of her final major project which is being showcased at Blackburn College as part of their annual FE Art and Design Show 2022.

Janek said: “Claire’s illustrations really bring the story to life. When you see the words with the illustrations on the book, it really is amazing. Claire has done a fantastic job.”
