Two students and a member of staff from a high school took home awards for ‘exceptional contributions’ to school and community life.

Year 9 pupil Diesel Hussey, year 10 pupil Lily Tattersall and staff member Nusrat Amin from the Hyndburn Academy all won awards at United Learning’s Best in Everyone Awards 2022, held at The Queens Hotel in Leeds on Friday, June 24.

Year 9 student Diesel was crowned Young Hero of the Year in recognition of his role as a young carer for his mother.

Alongside his responsibilities at home, Diesel excels in his studies, always putting the utmost effort into his lessons and completing his homework on time.

Diesel said: “I feel proud to have won this award. It is sometimes hard at school if my mum is unwell.”

In her nomination, Year 10 student Lily and winner of the Pupil of the Year Award is described as an “exemplary student” with admirable application and determination.

This year, Lily was cast as the lead in the school’s production of ‘Peter Pan’, showcasing her exceptional performing arts abilities and resilience over many shows.

Lily’s ongoing charity work has also led to her being awarded a place on a trip to Eswatini as part of the UK Government’s Turing Scheme this summer.

Lily said: “I feel very proud to have won this award. I like that I have been recognised by the teachers and rewarded for the little things I do in school every day, my consistent behaviour and my hard work.”

In being crowned Support Staff of the Year, Nusrat Amin was praised for the invaluable contributions she makes to many aspects of school life.

Nusrat provides key pastoral support to students across the academy, running a Breakfast Club every morning and providing after-school support.

In particular, she works closely with students who have English as an additional language, translating resources and assisting them in lessons where needed.

Nusrat said: “I am so honoured to receive this award, I was genuinely speechless when Miss Palmer handed me the letter. It is an award for simply doing what I love and one of the most unique events in my life. I am proud of the students that I support and without them I would not be where I am today.”

Each year the awards honour individuals, teams and departments from across the Group for the exceptional contributions they have made to school and community life.
