A group of men who had been seen begging near a supermarket have now been referred to receive the support they need, according to police.

The four men were seen near the Sainsbury’s on Active Way on Burnley and at different parts of Colne Road near the traffic lights, with residents and town centre visitors having expressed concerns for their welfare.

But police have said that they have now identified the men and have made referrals for the group to be given the support they need.

A police spokesperson said: “We have again received reports about these males and are now able to identify these individuals.

“I know there were some comments previously around concerns for this group and of which have been addressed.

“Checks have been made with the council and immigration for rights to work and live locally.

“Some good news is that there are no concerns for the legitimacy of them to live in the country and have suitable living conditions.

“We have also made referrals for them to receive support in terms of food and drink.

“Thank you again for your comments and support.”

Anyone with any similar concerns has been encouraged to contact police by calling 101 or 999 in an emergency.
