WHEN it was built in 1968, the Trafalgar Gardens complex in Burnley, was heralded as the future of public housing.

Less than 30 years later the Trafalgar flats as they be came known were being brought down to earth.

These photographs from our archives show demolition working beginning in November 1994.

It would be prove a major undertaking to pull down the tower blocks and the to clear the site so that a new housing development could take shape.

The honour of getting demolition underway fell to former Trafalgar resident Lillian Hutchinson who got behind the controls of one of the giant excavators brought on to the site to pull down the buildings.

A convoy of lorries took the debris away from the site on a daily basis as the homes to hundreds of families over the years were reduced to piles of rubble.
