A group of primary school pupils have been showing off their musical talents, becoming accomplished on the ukulele.

St Anne’s and St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School, based in Sandy Lane, Accrington, has linked up with Lancashire Music Hub and all Year 3 and 4 pupils have ukulele lessons.

Acting assistant headteacher Gill Chadwick said: “The pupils really enjoy it.

“We have more than 30 ukuleles and the pupils get tuition every Friday for two terms and then they put on a musical performance for the parents.

“Part of the National Curriculum is for pupils to learn an instrument and it’s been lovely how they have taken to it.

“At St Anne’s and St Joseph’s, we understand that arts are a valuable aspect of the curriculum. We want pupils to flourish and show their creativity and artistic talents.

“In Years 4 and 5, those pupils who want to can go on and have guitar lessons through the Lancashire Music Hub.

“We are also part of the Lancashire Music Hub’s ‘Charanga Music School’ so we have pupils learning the glockenspiel, piano and other instruments. We have some extremely talented pupils!”

Pupil Ibrahim Mohammed said: “I like it as we learn songs.”

Cole Walsh said: “It’s good fun.”

Louisa McGrath added: “We learn new chords and notes every week on the ukulele.”
