A COUPLE who spent their honeymoon night at a hotel were invited back nearly 46 years later at the same price they paid.

Clare and Ken Wood got married in Great Harwood on August 7, 1976, and spent the night of their wedding at Stirk House Hotel in Gisburn.

The pair were looking through some paperwork when they came across the invoice from their stay which cost £13.49 and sent it to the hotel with a letter to give them a laugh as to how different the costs were then compared to now.

Much to their surprise, the hotel responded and offered the couple a one-night stay at the same price of £13.49.

Clare Wood, 66, said: “We sent in the letter as we thought it would give them a bit of a laugh, we didn’t expect to hear anything back.

“Since our wedding night, we haven’t stayed there since, but we have driven past it. The hotel is just lovely, and we went into the old part of the hotel.

“We had an evening meal, and the food was just beautiful. We are very grateful that they offered us the stay.”

Clare and Ken, 73, who live in Skelton, North Yorkshire, said their recent stay was fantastic and have thanked all the staff, including their waiter Daniel, who served them during their stay.

In the letter, the couple remarked about how lovely their stay had been on the night of their wedding and that at that time, they were able to buy a week’s food shop for just £5 and fill up a full tank of petrol in their car for £1.50.

After their stay in 1976, the couple went on to spend some time together on the Isle of Skye, driving their Ford Anglia to the island.

When the couple travel on the A59 they reminisce about their evening at the hotel and visiting Clare’s parents, who hailed from Accrington.

They were delighted to see how the hotel looked in 2022.

The sales manager for Stirk House Hotel, Jane Adamson, said: “We were delighted to be able to welcome Mr and Mrs Wood back after so many years.

“We do hope that it won’t be as long before we see them again.

“We love all the stories, memories and pictures sent to us by guests. Each one is a lovely reminder as to what a special place Stirk House has been for so many people over the years.”
