Today (June 22) thousands of children in the UK will walk the streets near their schools to raise awareness for the need for safer roads – but where are the accident hot spots in Blackburn with Darwen?

Those taking part in the march, aged between four and 11, are among more than 90,000 pupils across the UK from more than 600 schools uniting in the national event.

Latest official figures show that 10,125 children were killed or injured on roads in the UK in 2020 - 28 children every single day; an average taken from the last five years gives a figure of 14,696.

This means that, on average, 40 children have died or suffered injuries as a result of road crashes every day since 2016.

Department for Transport (DfT) figures for 2016 to 2020 show that on average 12,406 children aged 0 to 15 are killed or injured on roads in England annually.

Crash Maps is an interactive map which shows you where slight, serious and fatal car accidents have taken place.

A filter allows you to specify the casualty type – including accidents where a child was the casualty.

The map reveals where these car accidents involving children have taken place. It’s important to note that some of these child casualties may be linked to children in vehicles and not always those crossing roads.

One accident in 2016 was resulted in a child fatality and that accident took place in Ash Street, Blackburn.
