A lorry has hit a bridge in Accrington meaning train services have had to be halted.

At around 1pm Northern announced trains would either be cancelled or delayed through Accrington Railway Station due to the incident.

Northern Assist tweeted: “Due to a lorry colliding with a bridge at Accrington services are unable to run through the Accrington area.

“Train services running through this station will be cancelled or delayed.”

Currently, there are no trains scheduled to leave from the station.

Accrington station is also undergoing maintenance work for the next month.

Work started last month to protect the station building from the weather with the installation of new waterproofing systems.

During ticket office opening hours, people will only be able to use the station building foyer to access the station, due to work taking place outside the ticket office.

When the ticket office closes at 3pm access will revert to the entrance outside the ticket office.

Stair and ramp access from the station car park will change as the work progresses, however it will be clearly signposted for passengers at all times.

The works are progressing in phases and are programmed to last up to two months.

Northern advise commuters to check before they travel for alternative routes.
