Concerns have been raised by residents with cars parked on pavements and even junctions on a busy road in the Ribble Valley.

The section of road in Whalley Road, close to Greenacre Street, Clitheroe, is home to takeaways and a taxi-rank and residents say the "inconsiderate" parking goes on seven days a week.

Lancashire County Council said they were aware of the issues in the area and would act on any parking which was "causing a clear safety problem".

Images show cars parked on pavements and even on a give way itself.

One resident, who wished to be named as Mr Robinson, said: “It is happening every night in the same place and it is the same culprits.

“I first contacted parking services back in 2019 and things have just got worse.

“The issue is that the police aren't in charge of double yellow lines issues anymore as far as I know, just obstructions.

“You will see that most of the images show cars both on the pavement and double yellows, which is a clear obstruction to both pedestrians and motor users. Yet, the police just drive past night after night.

“This is all 4.30pm onwards. Coupled with the fact traffic wardens finish at 5pm, nobody is taking charge of this issue and it is causing chaos for local residents and pedestrians.”

Ribble Valley Council do not enforce the parking which is managed by Lancashire County Council.

Peter Bell, regulation and enforcement manager for Lancashire County Council, said: "We are aware of the issues with poor parking at certain times in this area, and in many similar locations, mainly led by the rise in popularity of online food delivery services which are putting more pressure on parking availability.

"We are actively seeking to tackle these issues by carrying out evening and late night enforcement, and will look to target this area in the coming weeks.

"We can issue penalties to vehicles parked on pavements behind yellow lines, so drivers should not think they can escape enforcement by parking wholly on the pavement.

“Obstructing the pavement, and causing a clear safety problem by obstructing a junction as shown in these photos, are also both issues which can be enforced by the police."
