Residents have spoken of their "shock" following a dog attack which left an elderly woman with serious injuries.

The woman was attacked by two ‘pitbull-type’ dogs in the garden of a house in Devon Road, Blackburn, on Tuesday afternoon.

The attack left the victim with serious, life changing head and facial injuries, Lancashire Police said.

The dogs have been seized from their owners and an investigation is now underway, officers have confirmed.

The incident is believed to have happened at the top of Devon Road by the junction with Worcester Road.

Today, some residents were out in their gardens enjoying the sunshine. Officers could also be seen making enquiries with households nearby to the property this afternoon.

A resident, who did not wish to be named but lives close by, said: “It is quite shocking to hear this. It is a safe place to live and everyone looks out for everyone else.

“This is a very safe area and there have been no issues of this nature in the past. Everyone knows everyone else and we all get along.

“I go out for walks and prayers early in the morning and never had any issues. My kids play out too.”

Another resident said all he heard was "dogs barking" at the time of the incident, around 2.30pm.

Other residents further along Devon Road were unaware of the incident but also shared their concerns for the welfare of the victim when they had later learned of the incident.

A police spokesperson said: “A woman aged in her 70s had been attacked by two dogs in the front garden of an address in Devon Road.

“The woman suffered serious head and facial injuries and was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment.

“The dogs, believed to be a pitbull-type breed, have been seized from their owner and an investigation is underway.

Det Sgt Peter Davies, of Blackburn CID, said: “We can confirm we are investigating a dog attack in Blackburn.

“The woman involved was believed to be a making a delivery to the address when she was attacked. She has suffered significant, life-changing injuries.

“Our thoughts are with her and her family at this time.

“The dogs involved have been seized and an investigation into the circumstances around the attack is underway.”
