A motorist has been banned from driving and ordered to pay almost £1,000 after terrifyingly driving along a local motorway the wrong way.

Christian Luke Thompson, 31, of Water Street, Great Harwood, was caught driving down the M65 in the wrong direction, close to junction six for Whitebirk, in his Volkswagen Fox on May 30, 2021.

The offence against Thompson was found proven in a single justice procedure on December 30, but sentencing was delayed until May 18 to consider a disqualification from driving.

In the hearing at Preston Magistrates' Court, he was fined £660, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £66 and court costs of £110, totalling £836, which he has until June 15 to pay the total amount.

He was also disqualified from driving for six months, which magistrates said was "obligatory due to repeat offending", court documents show, while he also had his driving licence endorsed with three penalty points.
