Three men have been arrested after two police officers were assaulted during a late night disturbance.

Police said they were called to Market Place in Clitheroe just after 10pm after receiving reports of a 'disturbance' in the town.

When they arrived, three men were quickly arrested by two officers, who were assaulted in the process.

A number of passers-by stepped in to help the police and the three men were taken to custody.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Last night at 10.05pm we were called to Market Place, following a call of a disturbance.

"Officers attended and three males were arrested.

"During the incident two police officers were assaulted.

"We would like to pass on our thanks and gratitude to the members of public who stepped in and helped our officers."
