THE reception area at Darwen Town Hall has reopened after a Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend flood.

It was shut on Monday to deal with the problem caused by by blocked drains.

The problem has raised wider concerns about the state of the building, notably damp in the walls of the council chamber and other rooms.

A Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council spokesman said: "On Monday, due to health and safety concerns for customers, visitors and staff, we had to close the reception area until the issue was resolved.

"The area was partially re-opened Tuesday, and now is fully open.

"Normal service has now resumed.

"We are sorry for any inconvenience caused to residents."

Cllr Kevin Connor, deputy leader of Darwen Town Council and Conservative borough councillor for Darwen South, said: "The problem was an obstruction in the drains which caused the flood.

"I am pleased it was sorted so quickly.

"People do need access to the town hall for information and other purposes.

"Now the carpets will have to be replaced."

Cllr Dave Smith, Labour representative for Darwen West on the town and borough councils, said: "This is good news.

"I am glad it has been resolved so quickly.

"But other problems - notably the damp in the walls - will take a bit longer to sort out."
