A 55-year-old has been banned from driving after being caught almost three times the legal limit.

Jonathan Murtagh, of Talbot Bridge, Clitheroe pleaded guilty to drink driving and was sentenced at Burnley Magistrates' on Thursday.

The court heard how on January 8, Murtagh had been caught by police driving his Black Audi on Clitheroe Road, Bashall Eaves while over the limit.

As a result of community information provided to police Murtagh was stopped and arrested and taken into custody and produced a breath alcohol reading of 88, with the legal limit being 35.

On Thursday he was handed a 44 month ban from driving with fines and costs totalling £803.

Arresting officer PC Nigel Keates said: "Drink drivers are a menace on our roads and such drivers are often involved in serious accidents which can and do result in life changing or fatal injuries to those affected.

"You may lose just your licence you may also lose your liberty, your job, your income, and cost innocent members of the public to suffer at your hands there's no point being sorry after the event."

The police urge anyone that believes they have seen a drunk driver on, or about to head onto the roads to report it to police.
