A TOWN centre road will be shut in both directions today so utility repairs and maintenance can be carried out.

Barton Street, close to the Reel Cinemas and King George’s Hall, is closed and traffic has been diverted.

The Barton Street car park is still accessible via Cardwell Place and Feilden Street.

Motorists are advised to find alternative routes if heading to Darwen Street or to Preston New Road in the opposite direction.

Work is to continue for "utility repairs and maintenance works" on the road for several weeks, with it not due to be complete until July 8.

The buildings on Blakey Moor opposite King George’s Hall are presently undergoing major renovations.

When complete they will boast two units for food and drink, retail, or arts uses as the centre of a new ‘cultural and leisure quarter’ in Blackburn town centre.

The renovations are part of key element in the Blakey Moor Townscape Heritage Project to transform the historic area.
