AN "encouraging" primary school with "enthusiastic" pupils has improved from ‘requires improvement’ to ‘good’ in their most recent Ofsted inspection.

St Peter's CE Primary School in Darwen has achieved the ‘good’ rating following an inspection on March 2 and 3.

This came after the school was last rated as ‘requires improvements’ by the inspection body in February 2018.

Headteacher Victoria Weddle and the chair of governors said they are proud of the work the school community has done to ensure the school has thrived through the pandemic.

Ms Weddle said: “We are delighted with the grading. This has been a long time coming because of the pandemic.

“We feel we now have the grade we deserve. I am so proud of all the staff, children and families who have worked so hard during such a difficult time to bring us back up to where we belong.”

The inspectors praised the "broad and ambitious" curriculum, with leaders providing a "wealth of suitable information for teachers’ which means pupils ‘deepen their understanding" of subjects.

The inspection report said: “Pupils live up to high expectations that leaders have for them. They know that leaders want them to do their best.

“Pupils enjoy active playtimes with their friends. They understand the importance of respect. Pupils support each other and behave well.”

The school was also graded as good during their Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools in December 2021

Inspectors added: “The Christian vision permeates every aspect of the school. It is understood and articulated by all members of the school community and ensures that everyone flourishes in a welcoming, inclusive and loving environment.”
