AN Indian street food chain which has its roots in Lancashire is opening its first restaurant in the county this summer.

Mowgli, which has restaurants in Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham Sheffield and Leeds, to name just a few, will be opening a brand new eatery in Preston on July 11.

Anticipation around Mowgli's arrival in Lancashire has been brewing for some years, as the established street food chain was due to open in the city pre-Covid, but this was put on hold due to the pandemic.

In September last year, owner Nisha Katona, from Ormskirk, announced she had signed a new lease to open at a different location in Preston city centre.

The new restaurant will now be located in the former French Connection in Preston's Miller Arcade, on the corner of Church Street and Birley Street.

Sharing photos of the progress on their social pages, a spokesperson said: "Preston Mowgli has a face!

"Opens July 11 with booking lines opening next month. A taste of things to come Preston!"

Founded in 2014 by Ms Katona, formerly a child protection barrister, she gave up the career she'd been in for 20 years to open a restaurant serving the kind of food Indians eat at home and on their streets.

Opening her first establishment in Liverpool, closely followed by a restaurant in Manchester less than a year later, the simple dishes of a Mowgli menu are a million miles away from the curry stereotype.

Mowgli's website states: "These dishes convey the truth that real Indian food is extremely healthy, often vegan and always packed with fresh flavour."

In 2018 Mowgli was awarded a placement in The Sunday Times Fast Track 100 list, and in 2019 Nisha was recognised with an MBE in the 2019 New Year Honours list for services to the food industry.
