LANCASHIRE County Council has been left red-faced after an ironic spelling error was shared across social media by a school headmaster.

The council has promised to “try harder in the future” after misspelling a Lancashire secondary school's name as ‘Grammer’ instead of ‘Grammar’.

Headmaster of Lancaster Royal Grammar School, Chris Pyle, spotted the spelling error on a bus stop outside the school.

He took a picture and shared it to his followers with the caption: "Umm…"

Dozens of people have since commented on the photo, seeing the funny side of the spelling blunder.

One person said: “Oh that’s just wonderful!”

“Love that. Retest for someone,” said another.

A third Twitter user commented: “That's so funny! The irony.”

“I’ll pop over with my Sharpie,” said another.

A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said it is glad people are able to see the funny side of the situation and promised to correct the mistake.

They said: "The irony of this unfortunate spelling error is not lost on the county council.

"Thank you to Lancaster Royal Grammar School head Dr Chris Pyle for bringing this to our attention.

"This schoolboy error does certainly not meet Lancaster Grammar's exceptionally high standards.

"Rest assured, we will correct this mistake and replace the bus stop plates over the coming days.

"We're glad people have been able to see the funny side and would like to reassure everyone that we will try harder in the future."
