A man has been detained under the mental health act after being spotted on the roof of a hotel.

Police were called on Monday afternoon to the Kimberley Hotel on South Promenade in Blackpool after receiving reports that a man was on the roof.

An early statement from police asked people to avoid the area as they worked to bring to incident to a safe conclusion.

A spokesperson for the police said yesterday: "We are currently at a scene at the Kimberley Hotel on the South Promenade where a man is on the roof.

"Our officers are working hard to bring the incident to a safe and swift conclusion.

"In the meantime, we would ask you to avoid the area if possible."

It is believed the man, aged 30, remained on the roof for several hours while police attempted to negotiate with him.

He was eventually brought down at around 8pm and was subsequently detained under the mental health act.

The police spokesperson added: "He was on the roof of the Kimberley Hotel on South Promenade.

"He was brought to safety at around 8pm and detained under the mental health act."
