A set of twins are hoping they are the youngest brothers to trek to Mount Everest Base Camp.

Ethan and Lucas Holden, aged 12, completed the challenge with their parents Craig and Sally over the Easter break.

The twins, who are year seven pupils at Bowland High School, took 10 days to make their way to the base camp, walking for 10 hours some days, to reach the site more than three miles above sea level.

Craig said: “It was Ethan and Lucas that wanted to get to base camp, they kept pushing and spurring us on.

“Me and Sally were telling them we wanted to stop. It was them who wanted to keep going and get there.

“We are so proud of them.”

The family, from Waddington in the Ribble Valley, decided to take on the trek for Craig’s 50th birthday, with him wanting to cross the climb off his bucket list and do something big to mark the occasion.

Now, looking back on the journey, Craig, who is a double world record holder, decided to do some research after wondering whether the brothers were the youngest set of twins to tackle the journey.

Craig cannot find information about any younger twins having completed the challenge so he has contacted Guinness World Records to see whether the boys can become world record holders themselves.

Craig added: “I don’t think they realised how rare it was and how difficult it was for them to do that.

“We enjoyed it so much and now the twins want to keep travelling the world and doing more challenges like this.

“We are quite a sporty family, and it is great that the boys are so excited about things like this.”

The family spent 14 days in the mountains after starting their journey on March 28, having flown into Lukla in Nepal.

The trek from Lukla, which is at 9,200 feet, to Mount Everest Base Camp at 17,500 feet, is approximately 38.5 miles long one-way.

Everest is the tallest mountain in the world at 29,031ft (8,848m) above sea level.

During the climb, known as the tea house trail, they would visit small villages and stay in homes there each night.
