An East Lancashire family have impressed Burnley's BBC Radio 1 DJ, Jordan North, after making a scarecrow in his likeness.

Burnley’s Ruth Davies and her family were taking part in the Worsthorne Scarecrow Festival, which took place at the weekend.

Theirs was one of more than 70 scarecrows which locals erected in the hopes of being picked as the very best.

The Davies family decided to create their scarecrow in the likeness of local idol, Jordan North.

They even put Jordan in a rowing boat, made by Ruth’s husband Michael, to reflect the mammoth Comic Relief challenge he took part in earlier this year, when he rowed 100 miles from London to Burnley.

Speaking about the family’s decision to make a Jordan scarecrow, Ruth said: “Being from Burnley, we have followed him and his career really closely.

“He’s such a wonderful representative of our town – he is articulate, ambitious and passionate about Burnley.

“My son, Noah, is also a huge Burnley FC fan, and obviously Jordan is too, so he loves him for that.”

They also wanted to raise some money awareness for Pendleside Hospice, who looked after Ruth’s grandmother before she died.

“Pendleside Hospice is amazing, Ruth said. “They are such an asset to our town and area.

“My nana passed away quite a while ago and she was in the hospice before she died. It’s such a wonderful place filled with wonderful people.

“They need a huge amount of money each year to keep running. We thought anything we could do to support the fundraising would be worth it.”

They managed to raise £67.30 after placing a donations bucket in front of the scarecrow.

Ruth said: “We were really happy with this figure – especially as a lot of people now don’t actually have cash on them.

“We put the bucket out and thought, even if we raise a tenner that is better than nothing. We also hope it raised some awareness too.”

While the Jordan scarecrow didn't win, Ruth said the scarecrow also spread a little happiness to passers-by.

She said: “Everyone really loved it. It would make people stop and smile. Making people happy while also giving back to the community is such a wonderful thing.

“Anything we can do to create a positive community atmosphere is so worth it.”

The family’s efforts did not go unnoticed by the former I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here star. Jordan shared the pictures to his social media channels.

Jordan said: “This has really made my week! Thank you so much Ruth this is a fantastic effort for the amazing.”

Ruth said the family were “thrilled” to have been acknowledged by the celeb.

She said: “After Jordan acknowledge the post my phone kept pinging with notifications. It was really thrilling and we were so happy he saw it and liked it.”
