People living in an East Lancashire village are to be given hundreds of sunflower seeds – and it’s all for a special reason.

Volunteer group, Langho in Bloom, will aim to deliver a packet of sunflower seeds to around 800 homes in and around Langho.

The hope is that locals will plant them in the front of their homes.

The aim of this project is to support the people of Ukraine and show refugees in the area that they are welcome.

A spokesperson for Langho in Bloom said: “The sunflower, as you probably know, is the national flower of Ukraine.

“We would love it if you plant these up and display them at the front of your houses in summer to create a continuous yellow theme throughout the village.

“They are dwarf sunflowers so won't need staking and are easier to grow than the giants. Information sheets will be attached.

“We know of at least one family from Ukraine who are seeking refuge in our village so I'm sure they will feel a huge sense of support and welcome."

It is one of the biggest community projects that the group has taken on.

A spokesperson said: “These are a gift from us to you and we don't want any money or donations for them.

“Thank you, as always, for your support.”

Dozens of people have rallied behind the community project.

Taking to Facebook, one person said: “There are some Ukrainians who have recently become resident in the village who will appreciate this very much.”

“If you have some left over, I'll plant some in Billington,” said another. “Great initiative well done.”

“We will pop them all out the front if they grow,” said a third.

Britain in Bloom is a small group of volunteers in Langho have got together to help spruce up the village.

Veronica Hargreaves, volunteer co-ordinator, says: “ Our small team has made a real impact in a short time.

“We are hoping to recruit more volunteers, schools, church groups and local businesses who would like to get involved and help us achieve our ultimate goal of entering Langho into the RHS Villages in Bloom competition”.
