East Lancashire’s Sir Ian McKellen let his hair down at the weekend after he was spotted at a club event with Olympic diver, Tom Daley.

The unlikely, but iconic, duo posed in photos together at Troxy, a music and events venue in London, on Saturday night (April 2).

Burnley-born Sir Ian, 82, was pictured wearing a pink shirt and strings of beads, while Olympic gold-medallist Tom was snapped in a mesh vest and leather, tassel jacket.

In one picture, they are beaming at the camera and in another they appear to be engaged in deep conversation.

Tom shared the pictures of himself with the Lord of the Rings star, writing: “[Saturday] night was so fun!”

Fans were quick to comment on the picture.

“Legend with legend,” One person said.

Another said: “This picture is the definition of gay icons. Look at you and Sir Ian McKellen smiling!”

“The two of you in one place? I’d have fought everyone there for their ticket,” said a third.

They were there to see the venue’s ‘Buttmitzvah’ show, which was described as an “all inclusive Passover celebration and a party like no other”.

The event description reads: “You’ll be welcomed in by the parents of the Buttmitzvah girl and can expect all the hallmarks of the best simchas.

From chair dancing and awkward speeches to shofar blowing competitions and Ru Paulstein’s Parting of the Dead Sea Runway.

“Do not miss this party.”

Sir Ian McKellen recently opened up about his northern roots and the reality of opening up to his family about being gay.

In a candid BBC interview with Amol Rajan, Sir Ian said he still has some regrets which he holds to this day, including his regret of not coming out to his dad.

He said: “I never talked to him (his dad) about being gay.

“The idea that he couldn’t have coped with the fact that his son was gay is inconceivable to me, even though I’m not aware that we had any gay friends or that he’d ever thought about it or that it had any impact on his life.

“Therefore it might have come as some sort of surprise to him, but there would have been no moral judgement.”
