BOOKWORMS showed their love for literature by entering a national competition.

Schools from all over the North West, including Haslingden High School, went online to take part in the National Literacy Trust Reading Champions Quiz.

The high school team of Fred Hardwick, Hafsah Mohammed, Seamus Wall and Freya Russell came fourth, by just one point, and also won the Participation prize.

Fred, 13, said: “The quiz was split into eight rounds of different topics, for example heroes and heroines and you had multiple choice and true or false questions.”

Hafsah and Seamus, both 12, along with Freya, 11, are members of the school’s Library Book Clubs for their school years.

Hafsah said: “It was quite competitive in places and the host Mr Dilly was really good.”

There were 14 competitions across the country and 19 schools took part in the North West event.

Seamus said: “We were given the award for Participation because of how nice and polite our team was and for being the most energetic.”

Freya described the competition as challenging and said her favourite books were Murder Most Unladylike series by Robin Stevens.
