PEAKY BLINDERS season six continued last night (13 March) – and Lancashire locals might have recognised a familiar area.

Bacup’s Lee Quarry made an appearance in the episode, as Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) embarks on a quest to see who can save his sick daughter, Ruby.

Superstitious Tommy believes a gypsy curse has been placed on her and is eager to find out who is responsible.

Last April, pictures emerged of Bacup Quarry as it was transformed into a traditional gypsy camp complete with wagons and other vehicles.

Others reported seeing an old graveyard being built in the area.

Now, the storyline and reasoning behind the set designs have emerged in dramatic scenes which aired last night.

In scenes, Tommy hunts down Esme Shelby-Lee, played by Aimee-Ffion Edwards, to see if she is to blame for placing a ‘curse’ on his seven-year-old daughter.

Esme is the widow of Tommy's late brother John Shelby.

Following John's death, Esme cursed the Shelby family declaring there would be "no peace" for Tommy and Arthur Shelby.

However, Tommy later discovers that Esme isn’t behind this particular ‘Gypsy curse’ – but she might know who is.

In later scenes, also filmed in Bacup, Esme takes Tommy to a graveyard where he is led to the burial site of a seven-year-old child called Connie Barwell.

Here, Tommy vows to track down Connie’s mother, Evadne Barwell, who is believed to have a laid a curse on Tommy’s daughter so that he would also “know how it feels” to lose a family member at such a young age.

Many fans took to Twitter to talk about the episode that left many feeling “broken”.

One person said: “Will never watch Peaky Blinders again I’m in so much pain.

“Well, the latest episode of Peaky Blinders was sad,” said another.

A third said: Tragic ending - but some folk will say that watching the Shelby brothers crumble away with disarray has some sort of poetic meaning.”

Lee Quarry isn’t the only Lancashire location that will make an appearance in the series.

Cast and crew also returned for one day only at the end of April and filmed scenes at Beacon Fell in the Forest of Bowland – so keep you eyes peeled in future episodes.

Peaky Blinders airs on BBC One, Sundays at 9pm. Catch up on previous episodes on Peaky Blinders on BBC iPlayer.
