A father-of-two who was struggling with the death of his grandfather took his own life.

John Paul Varley was found dead at his home in Charles Street, Nelson, on November 30.

A post-mortem examination offered a medical cause of death by hanging.

An inquest in Accrington heard how Mr Varley, 31, had been struggling with the death of his grandfather the week before and had been found intoxicated by his friend Sandy Dickinson on November 29.

Why do newspapers cover inquests and how do they work?

Coroner Sarah Sutherland said: "He refused to go to hospital and told Sandy that he would not harm himself as he had two children.

"The police and mental health team were contacted but practitioners could not speak with John as he was intoxicated and a referral was made.

"Sandy then received a message from John at around 9.45pm which said 'I am sorry'.

"She sent him a message in the morning but didn't receive a reply and so went round to his house and found him hanging."

Police confirmed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and Ms Sutherland recorded a conclusion of suicide.
