A new ice cream shop has opened in East Lancashire today (1 March) and it hopes to become a treasured business for generations of families.

Holdens & Co. is a family-run, artisan ice cream business and they are "proud" to join the Whalley community in the heart of the Ribble Valley.

Boasting parlours at Haigh Woodland Park, Wigan and their Village Store at Edgworth with further parlours in the pipeline, they say Whalley truly is the next step in "spreading joy throughout the next generation of ice cream lovers".

Sam Holt, marketing manager for the Holdens group, says the team is “really excited” about the new business venture.

He said: “Because we have been around for so long, it’s been a bit of a family tradition for people to bring kids to our shop at Edgworth.

“Generations of children have grown and many of these families have settled in and around Whalley and the Ribble Valley, which is why we decided that Whalley will be our next location.”

Holdens & Co. has been making their famous dairy ice cream since 1929, using milk from Holstein Friesian cows who graze in the fields surrounding the store in Edgworth.

Sam said: “Our ice cream is filled with ice crystals so it’s a lot denser, meaning it doesn’t melt immediately.

“It isn’t like normal ice cream it needs to be kept colder.”

Sam said they have been working on the Accrington Road shop for around six months and maintains that it is “one of the best in the North West” in terms of aesthetics and facilities.

He said: “We’ve spent a lot of time and energy getting this store right and getting the right staff in.

“I would say it’s one of the best ice cream parlours in the North West, in terms of facilities.

“We have really ensured the high-end spec of the interiors matches the quality of our product.”

He hopes it can become a shop that is used by several generations of families for years to come.

He said: “We hope it can become ‘that little ice cream shop’ that families continue to use for generations.

“Hopefully, in 20 years’ time, people can reminisce about the store and say ‘I went there as a child – I am going to take my children’.”

As well as ice cream, visitors can also pick up cakes, patisseries, homemade chocolates and even a coffee to wash their sweet treats down with.
