A councillor has said there is an urgent need for CCTV in his village after the public toilets were vandalised.

Ribble Valley Councillor for Whalley and Painter Wood, Cllr Ged Mirfin, said he is 'mad as hell' about the latest vandalism, and says it's the sixth time in the last 18 months that the toilets, close to the bus station off King Street have been damaged.

He said: "I'd like to understand what motivates people to behave like this?

"A distressed resident sent me these photos of the gents’ toilets close to Whalley bus station.

"Once again, be it by hooligans from within Whalley or outside it of it, vandalism has been visited on our lovely village.

"We urgently require CCTV on the bus station. After the theft of York Stone flagstones from Whalley Church and anti-social behaviour in the Abbey grounds over the last few days, for the first time in over four months it appears that anti-social behaviour in the village is escalating once again."

The vandalism took place on Sunday evening and Cllr Mirfin says he has now contacted the police to make sure it is 'nipped in the bud'.

He continued: "I have liaised with the police to make sure this is nipped in the bud through an enhanced police presence.

"The problem is that we appear to go through cycles of this behaviour and until a collar is felt and a sentence handed down on those concerned this will continue unabated.

"I would like to see a community restitution sentence handed down to those responsible.

"As well as fining them heavily, how about making them repair their ‘handiwork’ while wearing hi-viz tunics on which are emblazoned the words 'I am a vandal and am clearing up my own mess'.

"There is nothing more humiliating than being forced to carry out work in a hi-viz jacket so the whole community knows who you are to the value of the damage caused.

"Let us hope the scum behind these acts will have been caught on CCTV and that the severest possible punishments can be meted out accordingly."
