A man who led police on a dangerous pursuit while wanted for domestic violence and harassment matters has been jailed.

Carl Landon was spotted in Clayton-le-Moors by police on the evening of September 24.

The BMW he was travelling in triggered an ANPR camera and, due to the suspicion that the driver was wanted for domestic violence matters, the police attempted to stop the vehicle.

Burnley Crown Court heard how upon seeing the flashing lights, Landon tried to evade the police and sped off at around 60mph.

Prosecuting, Beth Pilling said: "He sped off towards Accrington and overtook several vehicles, veering onto the opposite side of the road, and continued towards a blind bridge.

"The officer in pursuit said she lost sight of him but then as she came over the bridge saw he had crashed and his vehicle was stationary in the middle of the road."

The court was told how at this point the driver's side door opened and Landon tried to get out, but the officer made a tactical move to block him in.

It was noted that when he crashed, Landon, who was also travelling with a female passenger, had made contact with a van and then crashed into a Mercedes, but his BMW appeared undamaged.

Ms Pilling said: "He was detained and accepted failing to stop for the police and said his initial decision was to pull over but then he 'did a stupid thing'.

"He also admitted to causing the crash."

Landon, of Lion Street, Church, has 15 convictions for 27 offences, some driving, some for criminal damage and battery and some for possession of a bladed article, for which he received a number of custodial and suspended sentences.

The 35-year-old was originally wanted on domestic violence charges but no further action was taken in relation to those.

Defending, Isobel Thomas said her client had already been liaising with a criminal offending team and was making good progress, and mitigated for a suspended sentence so he could continue with the rehabilitation work he was currently undertaking.

She said: "He suspected he was wanted by the police and accepted he drove in the manner he did.

"The matters he was wanted for related to an ex-partner and he was very frustrated at the time."

Landon was handed an eight month custodial sentence and banned from driving for two years extended for four months and ordered to pay a £156 victim surcharge.
