A MAN ignored a police harassment warning issued after his estranged wife reported a number of unwanted calls.

Blackburn magistrates heard that initially the warning had the desired effect but then Mohammed Maruf Yousaf started turning up at her house and making more calls.

Yousaf, 23, of Chapel Street, Brierfield, had been convicted in his absence of harassment and pleaded guilty to three charges of disqualified driving, three charges of possessing cocaine and drug driving. He was remanded in custody for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Alex Mann, prosecuting, said when the harassment started Yousaf and his wife had been separated for 12 months and were going through divorce proceedings.

After the harassment warning was given the aggrieved didn’t hear from her husband for some time but then the contact started again.

“As well as phone calls he started turning up at her house, banging on the door and shouting,” said Mrs Mann.

“He then began threatening her and her family. He said he would stab her dad and her brothers and drag her mum onto the street and strip her naked.”

Mrs Mann said the threats had terrified the victim.
