A gym has re-opened following a £200,000 revamp – with another being refurbished.

The gym at Blackburn Sports and Leisure Centre re-opened on Friday (January 7) after being closed for a number of days to instal new gym equipment.

This comes after the previous equipment, which was installed when the centre opened in 2015, has started breaking down frequently.

The refurbishment was agreed in a council meeting after Cllr Damian Talbot, leisure boss for the borough, proposed the £200,000 spend to refurbish both the Blackburn facilities.

Since the leisure centre in Fielden Street, Blackburn has re-opened, the council has closed Witton Park Arena to replace the gym equipment in there which has not been changed since it opened in 2014.

The Witton Park facility is set to re-open on Monday, January 17.

It is hoped by the council that the new equipment will encourage more people to join the facility as members.

The new equipment includes Watt bikes, treadmills, stair climber, free weights, weight machines and more.

The Darwen Leisure Centre gym was refurbished by the council in 2019.

The gym is following government guidelines that do not require face coverings while exercising.

Additional cleaning regimes, extra cleaning materials and sanitizers will also be in place.
