EYES down for some memories of nights out in Blackburn.

Taken in 1982, this photo shows the Mecca Bingo Cub on St Peter Street. The club was popular for several decades before dwindling numbers finally led to its closure in 2001. The site was bought and the building converted into a series of night clubs.

Originally the site of a former livery stable, the Olympia Roller Skating Rink opened on the site in 1909, one of four to be opened in Blackburn in just four months as a new craze swept through the town.

Less than two years later the Olympia became a concert hall and theatre and then a cinema. In 1958, Mecca spent £130,000 to create the Locarno Ballroom which, it was claimed, was the most modern in Britain at the time.
