New data has revealed the Blackburn with Darwen areas with the highest number of crime reports.

According to the police data, which was collected between March and August 2021, Blackburn with Darwen had the third highest number of crime reports in Lancashire.

Over the five month period, 11934 crimes were reported in Blackburn with Darwen beaten only by Preston (13460 crimes reported) and Blackpool (18009 crimes reported).

When compared to the population of Blackburn with Darwen, this averages out at 8.1 crime reports per 100 people.

According to the data, the most commonly reported crimes were related to anti-social behaviour (4551) followed by violent and sexual offences (3533).

Using the data, hotpots of criminality have been identified using "LSOA areas".

According to the data, the outskirts of Blackburn with Darwen town centre has seen some of the highest crime reports over a five month period.

Specifically, the catchment between Bank Top and Montague Street were 731 crimes were reported between March and August.

This area has seen the highest number of burglary reports in Blackburn with Darwen (23).

It is also a hotspot for anti-social behaviour (230) and shoplifting (151).

Another targeted patch is between George Street and Earl Street in Blackburn. 436 crimes were reported here over a five month period, the majority of which were for anti-social behaviour.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: “We appreciate that all crimes have a victim and that when an area sees a spike in crime it has a negative impact on residents and business owners.

“That is why we regularly monitor crime patterns to ensure our resources are in the places they are most needed at the right times.

“We are aware of issues on the outskirts of Blackburn town centre and we have dedicated targeted patrols in the area.

“Funding has also been secured specifically aimed at looking at crime prevention, including improving CCTV, improving lighting and engaging in educational work.”

It is the 37th highest on the list topping many other cities such as Portsmouth and Middlesbrough.

When compared to the population estimate, Blackpool’s crime reports are one of the highest (average of 12.7 crime reports per 100 people) in the country beaten by the City of London and Westminster.
