IT might not look exactly plush to modern eyes but this was an example of an East Lancashire employer going above and beyond as far as its workforce was concerned.

In 1964, Blackburn brewers Thwaites had undergone a major expansion and renovation project at its town centre site. The famous Thwaites Tower which would dominate the skyline for more than 50 years was built along with new brewing facilities and additional office space to cope with the increasing demand for the brewery’s ales.

This photograph shows the new staff restaurant which had been introduced as part of the modernisation plan. The chairs don’t look the most comfortable but at least there was a large photo of the Ribble Valley to brighten the place up a bit.
