A woman who ran a rescue sanctuary from her home in Darwen, caring for and saving the lives of countless cats and kittens has sadly died.

Maureen Savage, who ran Moggies Cat Rescue from her house in Stansfield Street, died at the East Lancashire Hospice on Monday November 29, following a six-year battle with cancer.

Maureen, 75, had been placed on end of life care, and before her sad passing, sent her gratitude and heartfelt thanks to all the people who supported her and Moggies, and all the cats she help to save over the last 20 years.

Lancashire Telegraph:

A spokesperson for Maureen's family said: "Maureen can't thank those who have supported her over the many years.

"Moggies has been just Maureen on her own, who has fundraised and worked three jobs to keep it running.

"If anyone would like to donate to Maureen's memory, all money received will be going to Alley Cats and Kittens.

"There are no cats left in Moggies at the moment and no outstanding vet bills."

Following the news of her death, many of Maureen's friends posted tributes on social media.

Julie Ann Brindle said: "Just heard the heartbreaking news that the lovely special lady who everyone knows as Moggies Maureen has passed away.

"You truly were a hero saving the lives of literally hundreds of cats and kittens, and someone I am proud to have been able to call a friend.

"Good night god bless love R.I.P."

Julie Evans said: "RIP Maureen, you did an amazing job with all those cats and kittens, you will be missed so much."

Maureen leaves behind daughters Keeley and Elise, son-in-laws Pascal and Pete, grandchildren Jordan, Charlotte, Catherine and Yannick, and many close friends.

Maureen's funeral service will be held at Pleasington Crematorium on Tuesday December 14 at 2.15pm.

Her family have asked for people to wear something Christmassy.

Family flowers only, donations to Alley Cats and Kittens and Friends of Rescue would be gratefully received.
